Jan Maddock of Mandan takes a measurement of the ice level from the trolley trestle over the Heart River on Wednesday afternoon. Maddock has been recording the ice levels on the Heart River from 5 different locations near and in the city of Mandan every spring for over 20 years. The measurements are then passed along by Maddock to the U.S. Geologic Survey. "It's kind of my rite of spring. The river is an interesting thing and it has its own life," said Maddock who started taking measurements this year on March 10. She plans to keep watching the ice levels "until the river is flowing free and if it stays warm it won't be much longer," she said. Maddock's stops are at the highway 10 bridge, highway 6 bridge, highway 1806 bridge and the trolley trestle. Due to construction there is no measurement this year from the Sunny Bridge on the west side of Mandan.
