Volkswagens from all over North Dakota gathered in front of the state capitol in Bismarck on a blustery 9-27 morning to set a record for the number of vintage Volkswagens ever assembled at the capitol. The distinctive little cars and buses were part of a day of activities for owners of the vehicles. After lining up for a group photograph the VW’s went in caravan style through Bismarck and Mandan with people in other cars giving each other the 'slug bug' multiple times. The caravan's first stop was Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and then after a brief stop at the blockhouses went north of Mandan to a barbeque with a mini-concert by the band Coned. Above, Spencer Fletcher, of Bismarck, surveys the capitol mall from the bumper of Joe and Nancy Woodmansee's convertible. Fletcher, 16, and his father, Noel, own a 1971 Volkswagen Campmobile and drove that to the event and in the caravan through Bismarck and Mandan.
