Darcey Anaquod, a men’s traditional dancer, points out multiple seasons of wear and tear to the eagle-feather bustle of his dance regalia. “It’s an honor to be given eagle feathers by your elders,” says Anaquod. “But, to deliberately go out and shoot them or obtain money for them is the wrong way.” Enrolled members of federally recognized tribes can legally possess eagle feathers that are passed down within a family or received as gifts from other Native people.(LINDA THOMPSON/Missoulian)
